Pharmaceutical name: Simvastatin
Pack: 10 pills (20 mg)
Zocor contains Simvastatin, a medication aimed at lowering cholesterol levels, specifically designed to treat high cholesterol by reducing elevated cholesterol and triglyceride levels in the blood, which in turn decreases the risk of heart disease.

Cholesterol is essential for several bodily functions, including the formation of cell membranes, the production of specific hormones, and the transportation of fat-soluble vitamins throughout the body. However, when cholesterol levels exceed what the body requires, it can accumulate in the arterial walls, leading to blockages that heighten the risk of heart disease. The Simvastatin in Zocor works by decreasing cholesterol production in the liver through the inhibition of HMG-CoA reductase, a crucial enzyme in cholesterol synthesis. Zocor effectively lowers “bad” cholesterol (LDL) which can lead to arteries becoming hardened and blocked, while simultaneously increasing “good” cholesterol (HDL), which helps to clear blockages in hardened arteries. It is important to note that Zocor only inhibits cholesterol production in the liver and does not affect the cholesterol derived from dietary fats, which underscores the necessity of maintaining a low-fat diet even during treatment with Zocor.

The recommended dosage for Zocor (Simvastatin) ranges from 10 mg to 40 mg, taken once daily in the evening, with or without food. Treatment generally begins with a daily dose of 10 or 20 mg, although individuals at high risk for heart disease may start at 40 mg daily. Simvastatin is restricted to patients who have been consistently taking simvastatin 80 mg for an extended period (e.g., 12 months or more) without signs of muscle toxicity, due to the increased risk of muscle-related side effects, including rhabdomyolysis, associated with the 80 mg dose. Patients currently tolerating the 80 mg dose who need to start a concurrent medication that interacts negatively with simvastatin should transition to an alternative statin or statin-based therapy that poses a lower risk of drug interactions. Those requiring more than a 40 mg dose should be switched to a different medication.

While all medications can potentially cause side effects, many individuals experience none or only minor effects. Consult your doctor if any of the most common side effects persist or become bothersome: Constipation.

Seek immediate medical attention if any of these serious side effects occur: severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); chest pain; dark urine; muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness (with or without fever and fatigue); pale stools; red, swollen, blistered, or peeling skin; severe or persistent abdominal pain; yellowing of the skin or eyes.
